No Meat Today 2027.1: photograph your plate and see its carbon footprint as clouds

No Meat Today 2027.1 adds meal scanning with Apple Intelligence on Private Cloud Compute, a Memories tab for the plates you photograph, a shareable poster of your year, and a Sources page that says where every number comes from.

Since 2019, No Meat Today has asked one question a day: did you eat meat today? With iOS 27, it can also look at the plate. A camera moon now orbits the Today screen: photograph your meal, or import a photo, and Apple Intelligence suggests what it sees. The recognized foods arrive as chips you can remove, and the plate’s CO₂e drifts up the screen as clouds. Nothing is logged until the usual YES or NO tap — the camera suggests, the person decides.

The update introduces:

  • Meal scanning — photograph or import a plate; Apple Intelligence suggests the foods, the app prices their carbon footprint in clouds, and you confirm with YES or NO
  • Say what the camera can’t see — tap the microphone and describe the plate out loud; the words travel with the photo, so the estimate knows about what was hidden under the sauce
  • Guess before Naomi does — wager a moon on how many clouds the plate makes
  • Memories — a new tab with one card per day for the plates you photographed: filter them, give one a heart, five stars or a bookmark, and bring a bookmarked memory into any meal
  • Your year on one page — History turns a calendar year into a poster, ready to share. Switch it to CO₂, Water or Land and it drops the calendar for things you can picture: kilometres by car, showers, football pitches
  • Cloud jar — choose how many clouds a day holds before it turns red; it starts at six
  • Four more things you can give up — shellfish, molluscs, insects and honey join the diet picker, alongside food groups you define yourself
  • Where the numbers come from — the impact page cites its sources (Poore & Nemecek 2018 via Our World in Data, the EWG Meat Eater’s Guide, Mekonnen & Hoekstra for water, the FAO for average diets), says which rows are the app’s own estimates, and every scan ends with “How scanning works”
  • The app turns sideways — Today, History, the poster and the scan each get a layout built for landscape, on iPhone as well as iPad

Privacy

Scanning runs on Apple Intelligence with Private Cloud Compute: photos are never stored, never used to train anything, and Apple cannot read them. Dictation uses the on-device speech recognizer, so what you say about your plate stays on the phone. Scanning needs iOS 27, a device with Apple Intelligence and a connection, and it has a daily allowance that iCloud+ can raise. Everything else in the app works as before, offline, on iOS 16.2 and later.
